The Controversy continues... ![]() Dvd
duplication for private home use has yet again been under attack by big
brother, the movie studios, and music industry. Digital rights
management, codes placed into cd's and dvd's have made it impossible to
copy cd's and dvd's.
Now
consumers are demanding and arguing for what has been termed "Fair
Rights" to digitally owned property. A consumer buys a dvd movie for
their kids, and knowing how some young children handle these discs,
they last for a very short time before they are damaged. Consumers have
the "Fair Right" to make copies of their own legally purchased media
for their private use.
The matter is still in courts today, and no doubt for some time to come yet. Some companies have been ordered to stop producing software that circumnavigates the copy protection (CSS) that is encoded into dvd's. This page then considering the above, will go into how you can make "BackUp copies" of your legally owned and private DVD's. Yes it is possible and very easy to copy dvd movies. They can also be converted into a highly compressed style or format called DIVX AVI. Avi video files have been around for a long time, you may have seen them in funny video's shared amongst friends in emails etc., but this DIVX (high definition) style can not only compress a DVD movie up to nearly 25% of its original size, but also play at full screen resolution, with hardly any loss of quality what so ever, maybe another comparison would be, that it is nearly 95% as good as an original DVD movie, and far greater and clearer than the VHS tapes that we are so used to. This is great if you would like to send your relatives a batch of home movies you have already recorded onto dvd's. To get an idea of the compression, this would be the same as having four (4) movies all aprox 2 hours long onto one blank DVDR disc. Or one (1) two hour movie copied onto a blank CDR disc (yes CD not DVD. Which then can be viewed on any computer with the correct free movie player all found easily on the net. I will go further into the player shortly. Here
I will list, and continue to add, more information as it comes to
light,
from out on the internet. Clicking these links will open a new page to

The ability to create copies of the media you've purchased for personal use is a long-accepted facet of the fair-use doctrine in U.S. copyright law (at least, it used to be). However, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) states that it's illegal to break the CSS copy-protection mechanism employed by most commercial DVD movies. What does that mean? Most fair-use advocates say that the policy directly contradicts U.S. copyright law, but the DMCA seems to indicate that you cannot make a copy of a commercial DVD, even for personal use, and you certainly cannot give a copied DVD to anyone or watch copied DVD files on your computer. We assume that fair use will eventually catch up and be established as a safety valve for consumers (which has been the pattern with previous technologies, such as VHS), but for now, the territory is still uncertain and a bit dangerous. Still, there is software out there--even freeware--that will circumvent the copy-protection schemes used on commercial DVDs and enable you to make copies of store-bought DVDs. However, Santa Fe Online does not encourage or condone the illegal copying of commercial discs, and doing so places you in violation of current intellectual property law. EVERYTHING I have read says while it is "Fair Use" to make a backup or convert to another format something you own or have license to play/watch. It is illegal to break the copy-protection placed on that item. BUT
This quote from the DCMA says
that while illegal to CREATE software that defeats copy-Protection, it
is legal to circumvent that same copy protection for fair use purposes.SO
